Bronwyn Hack and Mark Smith’s ‘Embodied: Limitless 2025 Commission Series’ is on at Arts Project Australia, Naarm/Melbourne until October 4. As the inaugural exhibition in APA’s landmark Limitless series, ‘Embodied’ presents ambitious new commissions that foreground experimentation and process. Both Hack and Smith explore the body as subject and metaphor, creating works that are expansive, rigorous, and deeply personal. The exhibition signals a new framework for long-form creative development at APA, affirming the organisation’s commitment to supporting neurodivergent artists and artists with intellectual disabilities at the centre of national and international contemporary art. Fred Williams’ ‘Gouaches and Late Etchings’ is on at Australian Galleries, Eora Country/Sydney until August 30. The exhibition highlights Williams’ late works on paper, where landscape is distilled into rhythmic marks, luminous fields of gouache, and etchings alive with subtle shifts of line and tone. As Dr Christopher Heathcote reflects, “We see in these later etchings the proficiency and amplitude of a skilled master… there is a subtle music to this mark making. The very lines sing.” These works reaffirm Williams’ pivotal role in transforming the language of modern printmaking in Australia, where each mark carries both clarity and resonance. David Palliser’s ‘Optional Symmetry’ is on at Jacob Hoerner Galleries, Naarm/Melbourne until September 20, 2025. In these new paintings, Palliser explores abstraction as a field of rhythm, collapse and renewal. Forms emerge and dissolve across the surface, marks arrive in moments of spontaneity and colour shifts space into unexpected configurations. Each work is carefully reworked until it resonates as both a visual and bodily experience, hovering between immediacy and refinement. Anne Ferran’s ‘Ghost’ is on at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne until 23 August 2025. In this exhibition, Ferran gives new life to long-forgotten ceramic casting moulds once used by her late partner, ceramicist Les Blakebrough. Originally crafted for function, these objects are reimagined through photography and video as ethereal forms that float, shift and dematerialise. The works transform utilitarian remnants into poetic explorations of memory, loss and creative afterlives, reflecting Ferran’s enduring interest in how objects carry traces of histories both personal and collective.
