Mattel is introducing a new collection of toys to engage children in supporting a greener future. The new Barbie line called Barbie Loves the Ocean includes three fashion dolls, a playset, and accessories made from 90% recycled ocean-bound plastic sources from waterways in areas that lack waste collection systems. Mattel has also launched a toy takeback program, PlayBack, which is designed to recover and reuse plastic materials from old toys. In the U.S an estimate 80 billion pounds of food are thrown away in our landfills each year. The food that ends up in our landfill produces a large amount of methane [methane being a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2]. Composting has a minimal effect, if any, to the environment. By using a method of composting that doesn’t produce methane we are contributing to protecting our environment and reducing our ecological footprint. Here are 10 things you didn’t know you could compost : ?Natural-fibre clothes : these fibres include pure wool, cotton, silk or linen. If you have items that are too damaged to give away or to donate this is a great alternative! Make sure you cut up the clothes into smaller pieces and that there are no synthetic threads, plastic buttons, metal zippers or stains from non-compostable substances. ?Latex : natural latex products are compostable! the next time you’re cleaning up after a birthday party don’t forget to throw your balloon fragments in the compost! ?White glue and masking tape: Elmer’s glue and masking tape bits and scraps are compostable! ?Wine Corks: corks are a natural product meaning they are compostable, just make sure they are made of 100% natural cork material! ?Fur, hair and nail clippings: hair is a rich source of nitrogen! Nails can also be composed if they are free of nail polish. ?Toilet paper roll: while bigger cardboard is meant to be recycled, smaller cardboard products such as a toilet paper rolls can be composed. ?Pet Food: you can compost pet food and treats such as dog bones, rawhide and catnip. ?Vacuum bag contents: what your vacuum picks up is usually made of compostable materials such as: dust, hair and dirt. Be sure to check the content of your vacuum pick ups before placing it in the compost for items that may not be compostable. ?Cotton swaps and cotton balls: as long as your cotton swabs are plastic-free you can add them to your compost bin! ?Used loofahs and sponges: making a switch to a natural loofah or sponge helps you reduce your ecological footprint! As soon as you are done using them just toss them in the compost!

Land degradation is the deterioration or loss of the productive capacity of the soil. It is caused by multiple forces, including extreme weather conditions and human activities that pollute or degrade the quality of soils and land utility, It is recognized as one of the world’s pressing environmental problems, with a quarter of the world’s total land area already degraded, according to the Global Environment Facility (GEF). In Mexico, a farmer has come up with an innovative salutation that will not only restore degraded land to productivity but also greatly enhances soil carbon storage. The process uses two plants, agave and mesquite, commonly found on semiarid lands that grow under drought conditions. The plants are intercropped and the agave is fermented and mixed with the mesquite. This technique is achieving success in Mexico and could be applied to global degraded lands. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles from commercial product development and the breakdown of larger plastics that are smaller than 5mm (0.2 inches) small. It is estimated that 75% of the microplastics found in the ocean are a breakdown of larger materials such as bottles, plastic bags, and fishing gears. There are two categories of microplastics: primary and secondary. Primary microplastics are designed for product development and secondary microplastics are caused by the breakdown of larger plastic items. Both types of microplastics are harmful to the environment, especially in marine and aquatic ecosystems. The journal Environmental Science ad Technology says humans consume between 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year and breaths in a similar quantity. As microplastics are easily found around us, here are 5 ways on how we can reduce our consumption and impact: - Purchase a reusable bottle and reduce the amount of bottled water purchased. - Buy non-synthetic eco-friendly clothes. - Avoid products that contain microbeads. - Switch plastic containers for glass containers. - Filtering our water can reduce our microfiber intake as well!
