Do you have a crutch that’s calms your nervous system? Alcohol, weed, Nicotine, Doomscrolling, Porn, shopping, video games. Or even something that seems like a positive in your life… traveling, escapism, constantly being busy, excess activities like sport, or work… Could taking a month long break, or possibly giving up a habit and replacing it with a better one, help you be reach your full potential, be more present, find more joy and peace in your life? Alcohol feels like a necessary evil in our society, we drink to fit it, to easy our social anxiety around others (who are also drinking to easy their social anxiety). We drink to relax after a stressful day. We drink as an excuses to see our friends, because.. “let’s grab a beer” is easier than, “let’s have a conversation”. Alcohol gives us confidence, it brings out our personalities, it eases our nervous system, it’s our partner in crime, it’s is our crutch to get through life with less friction. I find myself having more and more conversations with people who have a beer in their hand. Who don’t want a beer in their hand, so maybe we should start a conversation here. Comfort Zone = Danger Zone Comfort is the Enemy. When we are in a place of comfort, familiar territory, the known-zone life is good… but nothing good grows there. It makes us lazy, content and halts progression. We put off doing what needs to be done, to do what comes easy. Growth demands that we do the hard things. The things that have friction, the things that hurt. Sometimes we need to quit that dead-end job, end that friendship that’s keeping us in a rut, turn off Netflix and start that project, not eat that extra donut ? in the fridge. I find choosing small daily discomforts like cold showers, rainy winter runs, waking up before the sunrise are small shitty things I do daily to train my brain to getting used to discomfort. And it makes pulling off on bandaid ? on bigger things a lot easier. In every given moment we have 2 options: Step forward into growth, or step back into Safety. Seek Discomfort.. When I boarded a plane from Cape Town to France last month. I thought… “fuck this is gonna be a hard trip.” How do I integrate a brand/ an idea/ a foreign concept into a new country who has their own culture. How would I single handedly win over another community, a country, never mind actually physically building the expo stand, selling, entertaining and throwing parties without my Dirty crew. Well.. was I in for a surprise. It took me a few hours of being on the ground to realise that I was at home. These were my people and there was in fact no “I” to start with. Dirty Habits is not a brand, not a business, nor a new idea. It it a way of living and being. Dirty Habits represents an idea, the logo is a flag that people proudly grab and wave with pride because it aligns with who they are… By day 2 it felt like Dirty Habits was born in France. A community, a crew who has the same blood flowing through their veins. @etienne.desaunhac and @thelio_lupano who founded CHARGERUFRC for this same reason, to give a tribe a flag to hold, a “why” to live for… And all I did was pass the flag to them, so they could wave it with pride. In the beginning I felt threatened by movements like ‘Charger’. But now.. I embrace them and feel a sense of pride. And I look at new partnerships and friendships like this with excitement. Because fuck. If only I had had something like this when I was a young, lost and desperate to find my people, people who shared my passions and beliefs. That being said.. we super excited and proud to announce that our community is growing and the incredible French community will be making the family bigger with their transition from Charger into @dirtyhabits.fr ?? With insane events and projects in the pipeline. Dirty Habits community is growing, and we hope this is just the beginning of our Global evolution with a platform to elevate other communites in staying true to Dirty Habits Mission Statement: “Empowering the Brave, Through Adventure and Connection!”

Yesterday I was invited to be a keynote speaker at Business Network Event to talk about the the growth of the Windsports industry in Cape Town, and where it is going, Hosted By @cape_chamber . I knew I would be presenting to a tourist boards and company execs in suits, But instead of showing graphs & pie charts, I showed pictures of my hooligan mates and colleagues, and told stories about what and who makes Cape Town the best city in the world. People. Connections. Experiences. I’m honored to call this place home and grateful for the people from here and who visit here who I get to call friends. FYI. I’m scared of 3 things… sharks, heights and Public speaking, and the only reason I accepted this opportunity was to throw myself in the most uncomfortable situation I could possible imagine, and sink or swim. And I’m proud of myself for not sinking. ? Thanks for having me @klm @airfrance @cityofct @capeblu_ @redbullza
